What is Wellness?

The concept of wellness is frequently misunderstood and mistaken for health, well-being, and happiness. While there are common elements among them, it sets itself apart by not defining a static state of being (i.e., being happy, in good health, or a state of well-being). Instead, wellness involves actively being aware and making choices to achieve holistic health and well-being.

Wellness is the act of practising healthy daily habits to achieve better physical and mental health outcomes, enabling thriving instead of just surviving.

World Health Organization (WHO) Definition

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it is “the optimal state of health of individuals and groups.”

the Global Wellness Institute definition

The Global Wellness Institute defines it as the active pursuit of activities, choices and lifestyles that lead to holistic health. Its fundamental principles are also rooted in ancient societies from the West (Rome and Greece) to the East (China and India). Basically, these civilisations created the basis of what we now understand as wellness.

What does wellness entail?

It encompasses two critical aspects that are essential to understand. Firstly, it is crucial to recognise that it is not simply a passive or static state but an ongoing, active pursuit. Consequently, this pursuit involves making intentional choices and taking proactive actions to achieve optimal health and well-being.

Secondly, it is essential to note that wellness and holistic health go hand in hand. In other words, it goes beyond just physical well-being. It encompasses the harmonious integration of various dimensions, such as emotional, social, occupational, intellectual, and spiritual elements. Therefore, all the above-mentioned factors contribute in one way or another to an individual’s overall wellness.

What else should I know about wellness?

The fundamental principles are rooted in ancient societies from the West (Rome and Greece) to the East (China and India). These civilisations form the basis of what we now understand as wellness.

As a matter of fact, it is a personal journey greatly influenced by our physical, social, and cultural environment. However, you can also affect it with your decisions, actions, and ways of living.

Fundamentally, it involves a comprehensive approach to nurturing physical, cognitive, and emotional health. Therefore, it encompasses many healthy lifestyle choices, including self-care rituals and striving for a harmonious equilibrium across all facets of our existence.
